Type @ followed by a file name to pull specific notes into the conversation, or let it search the whole vault for whatever is relevant. Suggested edits appear inline and apply with one click. Web links, images, and YouTube transcripts can be added as background. You bring your own model — a Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini account, a paid key, or a free local model through Ollama — and install it from Obsidian's community plugin browser.

Risks of connecting a Claude subscription

As of January 2026, Anthropic has restricted third-party OAuth access, citing Terms of Service violations.

Smart Composer's subscription connect uses the same OAuth-style flow that tools like OpenCode have used. There are reports of Claude accounts being banned or restricted when subscription OAuth is used via third-party clients (example: anomalyco/opencode#6930). For OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google (Gemini), I have not seen comparable ban reports so far, but this is still not the same as official API access, and enforcement can change at any time.

Use at your own risk. Keep usage limited to personal, interactive sessions and avoid any automation.

Everytime we ask ChatGPT, we need to put so much context information for each query. Why spend time putting background infos that are already in your vault?

obsidian-smart-composer FAQ

Where does this run?
Inside Obsidian itself. Install it from the community plugin browser and it becomes a panel beside your notes.
Do I have to pay for a model?
You bring your own. Connect a Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini account, add a paid key, or run a free local model with Ollama.
Can I use this to find notes by meaning rather than exact words?
Yes — vault search surfaces related notes even when your wording does not match theirs.
Is it still maintained?
The author has marked it as not under active development, with occasional fixes only. Community forks are listed in the project's discussions.
Is connecting my Claude subscription risky?
The author warns that third-party sign-in has led to restricted accounts and suggests a paid key for anything beyond casual personal use.
Can it reach outside tools too?
Yes. It can connect to external tool servers, so the chat is not limited to your vault.
