hermes-browser-extension

MCP.Pizza Chef: abundantbeing

This extension puts a chat window right next to whatever page you're looking at, so you can ask your Hermes AI agent questions about it or hand it that page as context. It also adds a smart drafting helper that recognizes dozens of writing boxes across the web — email, social posts, and messages — and suggests a first draft you can review before sending. You will need a working Hermes Agent set up first, either on your own computer, through Hermes Cloud, or on a remote server with an account key, plus a Chrome, Edge, Brave, or similar browser.

What it is

Hermes Browser Extension is not a browser chatbot. It is a Chrome/Edge/Chromium side panel for the real Hermes Agent runtime. Choose a local gateway, attach to a signed-in Hermes Cloud agent tab, or connect to a self-hosted remote API/dashboard. Local and remote API connections can use the models, tools, skills, sessions, memory, and MCP servers already configured in Hermes; Cloud and dashboard-ticket connections are intentionally Chat-only.

This repo is specifically for the Hermes Browser Extension: the Chrome/Edge/Chromium side-panel integration for Hermes Agent.

New in v0.2.0: Hermes Assist

Hermes Assist adds a compact, site-aware drafting panel beside supported text composers. It recognizes 31 writing environments and adapts its primary action to the surface—such as Draft a reply, Draft a post, or Draft a message—while preserving useful site-specific actions.

Every model-backed action runs through the connected Hermes Agent. When the gateway advertises per-session model locking, Hermes Assist sends the exact selected provider/model and fails closed if Hermes does not acknowledge it. Released gateways without that contract use the active model configured in Hermes Agent and receive no unsupported override fields. Results are reviewed before use. Safe plain-text composers can apply a draft only after an explicit user action; framework-owned structured editors default to preview/copy. Hermes Assist never clicks Send/Post/Submit, navigates, purchases, or operates the page autonomously.

Private surfaces use per-site context controls and conservative defaults. Browser context remains bounded, redacted, labeled as untrusted, and visible to the user before it is sent.

hermes-browser-extension FAQ

What do I need before I can use this extension?
You need to already have Hermes Agent set up and running — either on your own computer, through Hermes Cloud, or on a remote server — plus a Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Brave. Setting up Hermes Agent itself, separate from this extension, is a developer-level task.
Do I need an API key or account?
Yes. Connecting to Hermes Cloud or to a remote server requires a sign-in or an account key. If you run Hermes Agent entirely on your own computer, you connect to it directly without an outside account.
Which browsers does this work in?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Comet, and other Chromium-based browsers that support the Side Panel feature (Chrome version 114 or later). A preview version for Firefox is also available.
Can I use this to draft replies to emails and messages?
Yes — it recognizes dozens of common writing boxes across the web, including email and messaging apps, and offers a suggested first draft you can review and edit before you send anything.
Will it send messages or posts on my behalf automatically?
No. It never clicks Send, Post, or Submit for you, and it does not navigate pages or make purchases on its own. Every draft is something you choose to review and use.
Does this work with AI apps like Claude Desktop or ChatGPT?
No — this extension is built specifically to connect to your own Hermes Agent runtime rather than to apps like Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, or Gemini.
How hard is it to set up?
Setup currently involves loading the extension into your browser as an unpacked developer extension, since it is not yet listed in the Chrome Web Store. That makes it best suited to someone comfortable following technical instructions.
Can I control what page information gets shared with my agent?
Yes — you can choose how much of a page is shared, and anything sent is shown to you first, so private pages are not sent without your choice.
