MCP-X is a free desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux that puts a chat window in front of whichever model you prefer, from ChatGPT to Claude to a local Ollama model, and lets you switch between them. Add MCP servers from a settings panel to give the model real abilities such as fetching web pages or reading files. It also holds a personal knowledge base of documents you upload, plus a library of ready-made assistants for writing, analysis, and coding.

Do I need to install anything technical?
On Windows the installer bundles what it needs. On macOS and Linux you install Python and Node yourself before adding tools.
Which models can I use?
ChatGPT, Anthropic models, Ollama running on your own machine, and anything that follows the OpenAI-compatible format.
Do I need a key?
For paid models, yes, you paste in your own provider key. A local Ollama model needs no key at all.
Can I use this to ask questions about my own files?
Yes — upload text, Markdown, CSV, JSON, XML, or HTML files and reference them directly in a chat.
How hard is setup?
Download the installer for your system, then paste a small settings block for each tool you want to add.
What languages does it speak?
English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, with more planned.
