open-cowork FAQ

Can I use this to turn a pile of files into a presentation?
Yes — its built-in Skills system can read through the documents in your workspace folder and put together a PowerPoint, Word document, or Excel spreadsheet for you.
Can I use this to organize a messy folder?
Yes — you can ask it to read, sort, rename, and clean up the files in your chosen workspace folder, and it handles the work for you.
Do I need an account or an API key to use this?
Yes. You'll need to sign in with an API key from an AI provider such as Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini, since the app itself doesn't include a model.
Which computers does this run on?
It's a desktop app built for Windows and macOS, with installers you download and run directly on your computer.
Do I need to know how to code to use it?
No. It installs with a single click on macOS through Homebrew, or by downloading and running an installer, and you interact with it entirely through chat.
Is it safe to let an AI assistant work on my files?
The app keeps its work inside an isolated, protected area of your computer, so changes stay contained to the folder you choose, though it's still smart to keep backups and review anything before approving deletions.
Can I get updates or give it commands from my phone?
Yes — you can connect it to Feishu or Slack and send instructions or receive updates from those apps instead of sitting at your computer.
Can I control other programs on my computer with it?
Yes — it can operate the on-screen controls of other desktop apps for you, similar to how a person would click and type.
