  • Clone the repository and build a local image to be utilized by your Claude desktop client

  • Change your claude_desktop_config.json to match the following, replacing REPLACE_API_KEY with your actual key:

Do I need a key?
Yes, a free one from alphavantage.co, pasted into the settings snippet. The server will not start at all without it.
Is there a usage limit?
Yes, and it is tight. The free plan allows 25 lookups per day in total, after which requests come back with a rate-limit notice until the next day.
Does anything cost money?
The live options command is a paid-plan feature and returns a subscription message on a free key. The other eleven commands work on the free plan.
Can I use this to check my portfolio each morning?
Yes — ask for a quote on each holding, but bear in mind a long list will use up the 25-lookup daily allowance quickly.
Can it buy or sell anything?
No. Every command only reads figures. There is no way for it to place a trade, move money, or touch a brokerage account.
Which apps does it work in?
The guide covers Claude Desktop and it also installs through Smithery, so any app that can launch a local command should work.
How current are the numbers?
Quotes reflect the latest trading session published by Alpha Vantage. Genuinely real-time options pricing is not part of the free plan.
Is it still maintained?
It works, but the last code change was October 2025, so treat it as stable rather than actively developed.
How hard is setup?
You paste a short snippet containing your key into your app's settings. The container route needs building an image first, so pick the simpler one.
