MCP.Pizza Chef: jasonjmcghee

Instead of pasting error messages into a chat window, your assistant can set breakpoints, step through the code itself, and check what a variable actually holds at any line, in any language VS Code can debug. It arrives as a VS Code extension from the Marketplace plus a few lines added to Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Continue. Nothing has changed since December 2025, so treat it as stable rather than actively evolving.

Enable Claude (or any other LLM) to interactively debug your code

This is an MCP Server and VS Code extension which enables claude to interactively debug and evaluate expressions.

That means it should also work with other models / clients etc. but I only demonstrate it with Claude Desktop and Continue here.

It's language-agnostic, assuming debugger console support and valid launch.json for debugging in VSCode.

Getting Started

  1. Download the extension from releases or VS Code Marketplace
  2. Install the extension
  • If using .vsix directly, go to the three dots in "Extensions" in VS Code and choose "Install from VSIX..."
  1. You will see a new status menu item "Claude Debugs For You" which shows if it is running properly (check) or failed to startup (x)

claude-debugs-for-you FAQ

Is this still being updated?
The last change landed in December 2025, so it is quiet, though it still installs and runs.
Which apps does it work in?
Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Continue are demonstrated, and other MCP-capable tools should work. VS Code must be open.
Do I need a paid key?
No. The extension is free and everything runs on your own machine.
Can I use this to debug Python?
Yes, and any other language VS Code can debug, as long as your project has a working launch configuration.
How hard is setup?
Install the extension, then paste a short block into your assistant's settings file.
Does it change my code by itself?
It reads and runs your code under the debugger. Suggested fixes are still yours to accept or reject.
