OmniFocus-MCP

MCP.Pizza Chef: themotionmachine

Twelve commands cover the whole loop: search tasks, projects and folders by tag, due date or status; add tasks and projects; edit, move, complete or delete them; and create dozens at once from a transcript or a syllabus. Saved perspectives and tags are readable too. The catch is the platform. It only runs on a Mac with OmniFocus itself installed, which is paid software, and macOS asks once for permission to control the app. Nothing else is needed.

README

OmniFocus MCP Server

npm version CI

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects OmniFocus to Claude and other MCP-compatible AI assistants.

OmniFocus MCP

Overview

This server bridges AI assistants and your OmniFocus database. Through natural conversation, an assistant can query, create, edit, and remove tasks and projects — including bulk operations. Some things you can do with it:

  • Translate a syllabus PDF into a fully specified project with tasks, tags, defer dates, and due dates
  • Turn a meeting transcript into a list of actions
  • Audit and reorganize your tags, projects, and folders conversationally
  • Create visualizations of your tasks, projects, and tags
  • Process dozens of items in a single batch operation

Quick Start

Prerequisites

  • macOS with OmniFocus installed
  • Node.js 20 or later (for npx)

The first time the server talks to OmniFocus, macOS will ask you to allow automation access. Grant it once and you're set.

Claude Desktop

Add the server to ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "omnifocus": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "omnifocus-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Then restart Claude Desktop.

OmniFocus-MCP FAQ

Does this work on Windows?
No. It runs only on a Mac, because it drives the OmniFocus app directly through macOS automation.
Is there an extra cost?
The server is free, but OmniFocus itself is paid software from The Omni Group and has to already be installed on the Mac.
Do I need an account or key?
No. The first time it runs, macOS asks you to allow it to control OmniFocus. Approve that once and you are set.
Can I use this to clean up my whole task list?
Yes — it creates, edits, moves and deletes tasks and projects, including dozens in one go, so bulk reorganizing is exactly what it is for.
Can it delete things by mistake?
It can. Removal and bulk edits are included, so read back what it plans to change before approving.
Which apps does it work in?
Claude Desktop and Claude Code are documented, and any other MCP app that can launch a local command works the same way.
How hard is setup?
You paste a three-line block into your app's settings file and restart it. Node 20 or later is required.
Is it still maintained?
Yes. The code was updated in early August 2026.
