Twenty-one tools are actually wired up, covering live prices, order books, candles, recent trades, funding rates and leverage tiers across more than twenty exchanges. Reading the market needs nothing but the software itself. Trading is a different matter: five tools can check your balance, place market buy and sell orders, and change futures leverage or margin mode. Those orders go through immediately with no confirmation step, and the cancel, limit-order and transfer tools listed in the documentation are not in the code.

CCXT MCP Server Integration Architecture

CCXT MCP Server Integration Architecture

The CCXT MCP Server connects language models to cryptocurrency exchanges through the Model Context Protocol. It serves as a bridge that allows LLMs to access real-time market data and execute trading operations across multiple exchanges through a unified API.

The architecture includes:

  • LLM clients (Claude and other MCP-compatible models) that send requests
  • The Model Context Protocol (MCP) that standardizes communication
  • The CCXT MCP Server that processes requests and manages exchange interactions
  • The CCXT Library that provides unified access to exchange APIs
  • Connections to multiple cryptocurrency exchanges

mcp-server-ccxt FAQ

Do I need an account or paid key?
Only for part of it. Prices, order books, candles and trades work with no account at all. Balances and orders need credentials from an exchange where you already have money.
Can it actually spend my money?
Yes. Market buy and sell orders execute the moment the assistant calls them, with no confirmation prompt, and there is no cancel tool here to undo one.
Are all the tools in the documentation real?
No. Thirteen advertised names are missing from the code, including cancel-order, cancel-all-orders, both limit-order tools, fund transfers, open orders and order history.
Where do my exchange credentials end up?
They are passed in as tool arguments rather than read from a private settings file, so your key and secret travel through the assistant conversation itself.
Can I use this to research prices with no risk to my money?
Yes โ€” leave the credential fields empty and only the read-only market tools will work.
Which apps does it work in?
Claude Desktop and other MCP-compatible assistants. It installs from npm or through Smithery.
Is it still being maintained?
The last code change was June 2025, so it has been quiet for well over a year. It is MIT licensed.
How hard is setup?
Moderate. Install the package, then paste a short snippet into your assistant's settings file.
