Do I need a key?
Yes, one of three. Either a key from Mem0's hosted service, or a Supabase address and key plus an OpenAI key, or just an OpenAI key for the throwaway local mode. With none of the three it shuts down straight away.
Which storage mode should I pick?
The hosted Mem0 one, unless you have a strong reason not to. Ten of the sixteen tools ā listing, fetching one memory, editing, history, exports and ratings ā return an error in both the local and the self-hosted Supabase modes, even though your assistant is still offered all sixteen and will try them.
Will my memories survive a restart?
Only in the hosted or Supabase modes. Local mode holds everything in working memory and loses the lot when the server stops, so treat it as a demo rather than a place to keep anything.
Can it delete things without asking?
A single memory can be removed with one instruction and no confirmation. Bulk deletion is different ā the tool refuses outright unless a confirm setting is explicitly true, and that check is genuinely enforced in the code, not just described in the README.
Where do my memories actually live?
On Mem0's servers if you use their hosted key, or in your own Supabase database if you self-host. Either way, anything you ask it to remember leaves your machine.
Can I use this to stop repeating myself?
Yes. Ask it to remember a preference once, then in later sessions ask it to check its memories before it answers.
Which apps does it work in?
Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline and Roo Code, using a short pasted snippet, or through Smithery's installer.
What happens if I set it up wrong?
Nothing visible. The server deliberately silences all its own messages to keep the connection clean, and quits without printing a reason when credentials are missing or wrong. Check your spelling before assuming the tool is broken.
How hard is setup?
Copy-and-paste level for the hosted mode. The Supabase mode is harder, because you must first create database tables from the setup instructions in the README.
