Twenty-nine tools cover a notebook from end to end: adding, editing, splitting, merging, duplicating, moving, and deleting cells, switching a cell between code and prose, clearing or rewriting saved results, reading an outline of a long notebook, searching inside it, and exporting it as a script, a web page, or a PDF. It cannot run any code, so results are only ever read or pasted in. Notebooks on a remote machine work too, over your usual SSH login.

Jupyter Notebook MCP Server (for Cursor)

This directory contains a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server designed to allow AI agents within Cursor to interact with Jupyter Notebook (.ipynb) files. It was created to overcome a limitation with Cursor. As of version 0.50.5, in Agent mode, the model could not edit notebooks or notebook cells in response to dialog in the AI chat pane. This provides the agent with a suite of MCP tools that allow direct notebook cell manipulation.

Although designed to overcome a limitation with Cursor, this MCP server does not have anything specific to Cursor other than the configuration instructions. You could easily configure this for use with VS Code (Insiders) or Claude Code or any model/agent that can take advantage of MCP. Note that VS Code (Insiders) has pretty good Jupyter Notebook support now.

This MCP server uses the nbformat library to safely manipulate notebook structures and enforces security by restricting operations to user-defined directories. It also uses nbconvert to enable exporting notebooks to various formats like Python scripts, HTML, and more. The server handles all notebook operations through a clean API that maintains notebook integrity and prevents malformed changes.

cursor-notebook-mcp FAQ

Do I need a key or an account?
No. It works on notebook files on your own computer, or on a remote machine using an SSH login you already have. Nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay.
Can I use this to build a notebook from scratch?
Yes — it can create the file, add code and text cells in bulk, and reorganise them as the piece takes shape.
Can it run my code and show me the results?
No, and this is the biggest catch. It writes and rearranges cells, and can even paste results in by hand, but it never executes anything. You still run the notebook yourself.
Can it delete my work?
Yes. It can remove individual cells and delete entire notebook files, with no confirmation step and no read-only setting. It only reaches folders you list when you start it, so keep that list narrow and keep backups.
Can I use this at work?
Not as it stands. It is released under a non-commercial Creative Commons licence, so commercial use is not permitted without asking the author.
Which apps does it work in?
It was written for Cursor, but nothing inside is Cursor-specific. VS Code, Claude Code, and other assistants that read a config file all work.
Does exporting to PDF just work?
Not always. PDF export leans on extra typesetting software you have to install separately; script and web page exports have no such requirement.
How hard is setup?
Middling to technical. You install a Python package and tell it which folders it is allowed to touch, using full paths.
Is it still being maintained?
The last change landed in November 2025, so it has been quiet for the better part of a year. It still works, but fixes are arriving slowly.
