Image Generation MCP Server

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server implementation for generating images using Replicate's black-forest-labs/flux-schnell model.

Ideally to be used with Cursor's MCP feature, but can be used with any MCP client.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 16+
  • Replicate API token
  • TypeScript SDK for MCP

Setup

  1. Clone the repository

  2. Install dependencies:

    npm install

  3. Add your Replicate API token directly in the code at src/imageService.ts by updating the apiToken constant:

    Note: If using with Claude, you can create a .env file in the root directory and set your API token there:

    REPLICATE_API_TOKEN=your-replicate-api-token-here

    Then build the project:

    npm run build

Usage

To use with cursor:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Features
  3. Scroll down to "MCP Servers"
  4. Click "Add new MCP Server"
  5. Set Type to "Command"
  6. Set Command to: node ./path/to/dist/server.js

Do I need an account key?
Yes — a Replicate account token, which you put in a .env file or paste into the code. The README's instruction to paste it into the source file leaves your token sitting in plain text inside a project folder, so the .env file is the safer choice.
Does it cost money?
Yes. Every picture is generated on Replicate, which bills your account per image, so you need a funded Replicate balance before anything works.
How hard is setup?
Fairly hard. There is no ready-made package to install — you clone the code, install its dependencies, build it, then point your app at the built file. Plan on being comfortable with a terminal.
Can I use this to get PNG or JPEG files?
Only in name. The format and quality settings are accepted but never passed on to the drawing service, so a file saved as .png actually still contains the WebP image that came back. Anything that cares about the real format may reject it.
How many things can it actually do?
One. There is a single tool, generate-image. Size, aspect ratio, speed mode and number of images do work; output format and output quality do not.
Will it overwrite my files?
Yes. It creates the folder you name if it is missing and writes over any existing file with the same name without asking first.
Is the project still being looked after?
It has not been touched since February 2025, so treat it as a small personal project rather than a maintained product.
