git-mcp-server

MCP.Pizza Chef: cyanheads

Twenty-eight git commands are available to your assistant: status, diff, log and blame for looking around, then add, commit, branch, merge, rebase, stash, tag and push for making changes. It runs against repositories already on your computer and uses the git identity you configure, so no account or key is involved. Because push, reset and clean are all included, it can rewrite or discard real work, so point it at a repository you can afford to break first.

git-mcp-server FAQ

Do I need an account or a paid key?
No. It drives the git already installed on your machine, using the name and email you put in the config.
Can it push to GitHub?
Yes, pushing is one of the twenty-eight commands. It relies on whatever GitHub sign-in your computer already has; the server stores no credentials of its own.
Can I use this to review changes before I commit?
Yes — ask for the status and the differences and it lists exactly which files changed and how.
Is it risky?
It can be. Reset, clean, rebase and push are all included, so it is capable of throwing away uncommitted work. Try it first on a repository you do not mind breaking.
How hard is setup?
You paste a short block into your app's settings and fill in a folder path plus your name and email. Node 20 or Bun is required.
Which apps does it work in?
Any MCP-compatible app. The instructions show a Cline-style config, and the same block works in Claude Desktop, Cursor and similar tools.
Is it still maintained?
Yes. The code was last updated at the end of July 2026.
