Do I need a key or a paid account?
No, none at all. LM Studio is free, everything runs on your own computer, and nothing is charged per message.
What has to be running first?
LM Studio, open on your machine with a model loaded. You can also point it at a different computer on your network by setting a host and port.
How hard is setup?
Middling. There is a one-line install script or a container image, then a short config block for your assistant. Python needs to be installed.
Can it change or delete anything?
No. Every one of its tools only reads from or talks to LM Studio. It cannot touch your files and cannot remove a model.
Can I use this to keep sensitive text off the internet?
Yes, and that is the main reason people install it. Your words go to a model on your own hardware rather than to a company's servers.
Does the streaming option actually work?
Not usefully. The setting is accepted and passed along, but the reply is read in one piece, so you get raw output rather than a live stream.
Do all nine tools work on any version of LM Studio?
No. Six work anywhere, and the three that remember a conversation need LM Studio 0.3.29 or newer.
