MCP.Pizza Chef: mongodb-js
Built by the MongoDB team, this server lets an assistant look around your databases: listing collections, running queries you describe in words, checking whether an index is missing, and reporting on Atlas clusters. It works in Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and Windsurf once you paste a short config block. You supply a MongoDB connection string, and Atlas features additionally need service-account credentials. A read-only mode is available, and the maintainers recommend using it alongside minimal permissions.

mongodb-mcp-server FAQ
Which apps does this work with?
Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and Windsurf are all documented, and it works with anything else that supports MCP.
Do I need an API key?
You need a MongoDB connection string. The Atlas cluster features also need service-account credentials created inside Atlas.
Can I use this to explore a database I did not build?
Yes — asking it to list collections and show a few sample records is a fast way to learn an unfamiliar database.
How hard is setup?
You paste a small block of configuration into your app and supply your connection details. Node 22.13 or newer must already be installed.
Can it change or delete my data?
It can, unless you start it in read-only mode. The maintainers suggest read-only plus the smallest permissions that do the job.
Is this an official project?
Yes, it is published and maintained by MongoDB.
