MCP.Pizza Chef: coder

Coder sets up a complete, ready-to-code environment in the cloud for you or your whole team, so nobody has to install anything locally or spend hours configuring a new laptop. It also runs AI coding agents on your own infrastructure so they can write and test code without ever seeing your private keys or passwords. It connects to VS Code and other popular editors, and getting it running requires setting up a server yourself or using a hosted version, so this one is best suited for technical teams or a developer who sets it up for you.

Coder is a self-hosted platform for cloud development environments and AI coding agents. Workspaces are defined with Terraform, connected through a secure Wireguard® tunnel, and automatically shut down when not used. Coder Agents runs a native AI coding agent whose loop executes in the control plane on your infrastructure, with no API keys in workspaces.

  • Define cloud development environments in Terraform
    • EC2 VMs, Kubernetes Pods, Docker Containers, etc.
  • Automatically shutdown idle resources to save on costs
  • Onboard developers in seconds instead of days
  • Delegate coding work to AI agents on your infrastructure
    • Bring any model (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Bedrock, self-hosted)
    • No LLM credentials in workspaces, user identity on every action
    • Centralized model governance, cost tracking, and audit logging

coder FAQ

Can I use this to get a coding environment set up without installing software on my own computer?
Yes — Coder creates the workspace in the cloud, so all you need is a web browser or an editor like VS Code to connect to it.
Can I use this to have an AI agent write code for me safely?
Yes — Coder runs AI coding agents such as Claude, GPT, or Gemini on your own infrastructure, so the agent never needs your personal passwords or keys to do the work.
Which apps does this work in?
It connects to VS Code, JetBrains editors like IntelliJ, and any web browser, since the workspace itself runs in the cloud and you simply connect to it.
Do I need an account or an API key to use this?
You don't need an API key for Coder itself, but you will need to sign in to whichever AI model you choose to use, such as Claude, OpenAI's GPT, or Google's Gemini.
How hard is this to set up?
This one takes some technical know-how — someone needs to install and run the Coder server, typically a developer or an IT team member, before anyone else on the team can start using it.
Is this meant for a single person or a whole team?
Both are supported — you can run it for yourself to get one always-ready coding environment, or set it up so an entire team can spin up their own workspaces on shared infrastructure.
Will my work still be there when I come back to a workspace?
Yes — each workspace keeps your project files and settings, so everything is exactly where you left it when you reconnect.
Does it help save money on cloud costs?
Yes — idle workspaces can be set to shut down automatically, so you are not paying for cloud resources you are not actively using.
