MCP.Pizza Chef: Gentleman-Programming

This tool gives coding assistants like Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf a permanent notebook that survives after you close the app. Instead of starting over every session, your assistant can look back at notes from earlier conversations, decisions you made, and context about your project. It runs as a small program on your own computer and stores everything in a single local file, so there is no account required for everyday use, though an optional cloud-sync feature exists for teams.

engram /ˈen.ɡræm/ — neuroscience: the physical trace of a memory in the brain.

Your AI coding agent forgets everything when the session ends. Engram gives it a brain.

A Go binary with SQLite + FTS5 full-text search, exposed via CLI, HTTP API, MCP server, and an interactive TUI. Works with any agent that supports MCP — Claude Code, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Codex, VS Code (Copilot), Antigravity, Cursor, Windsurf, or anything else.

engram FAQ

Which coding apps does this work with?
It works with a wide range of AI coding assistants, including Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI's Codex, along with several others that use the same open connection standard.
Do I need an account or an API key to use it?
No account is needed for everyday use — your notes are stored in a single file on your own computer. An account and key are only needed if you turn on the optional cloud-sync feature for sharing memory across a team.
Can I use this to remember decisions from a past coding session?
Yes — that is its main purpose. It saves notes automatically as you work, and your assistant can search them the next time you start a new session, so you don't have to re-explain your project every time.
Can I use this to keep the same memory when I switch between coding assistants?
Yes — because it works with any assistant that supports the same open connection standard, tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf can all read from and write to the same set of notes.
How hard is it to set up?
It takes some comfort with a terminal. You install a small program on your computer, then run one setup command for whichever coding assistant you use, and it configures itself automatically from there.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes — the core memory feature runs entirely on your own computer and does not require the internet, though the optional cloud-sync feature does.
Will this slow down my coding assistant?
No — it runs as a lightweight background helper that only responds when your assistant asks it a question, so it should not add any noticeable delay.
