square-mcp-server

MCP.Pizza Chef: square

Built and published by Square itself, this links a chat assistant to the same Square account you take payments with, so you can ask for last month's takings, check what is running low in stock, look up a regular customer, or add a new item and price. It points at your live account unless you switch on sandbox mode. There is a read-only switch, and unlike most servers of this kind it is genuinely checked in the code before anything is sent.

README

Square Model Context Protocol Server (Beta)

This project follows the Model Context Protocol standard, allowing AI assistants to interact with Square's connect API.

Square Model Context Protocol Server MCP server

Quick Start

Get up and running with the Square MCP server using npx:

# Basic startup
npx square-mcp-server start

# With environment configuration
ACCESS_TOKEN=YOUR_SQUARE_ACCESS_TOKEN SANDBOX=true npx square-mcp-server start

# local runs
npx /path/to/project/square-mcp-server

Replace YOUR_SQUARE_ACCESS_TOKEN with your actual Square access token. You can obtain your access token by following the guide at Square Access Tokens. You can also set environment variables before running the command.

Remote MCP Server

Square now offers a hosted remote MCP server at:

https://mcp.squareup.com/sse

The remote MCP is recommended as it uses OAuth authentication, allowing you to log in with your Square account directly without having to create or manage access tokens manually.

square-mcp-server FAQ

Does this touch my real Square account?
Yes, by default. Everything goes to your live account unless you turn on sandbox mode, which points it at Square's practice environment instead.
Can I stop it from changing anything?
Yes. The read-only setting blocks every create, update, and delete before it runs. That check really is in the code, not just in the instructions.
Could it issue a refund or take a payment?
Yes. Refunds, payments, and cancellations are all available and run with no extra confirmation, so leave it read-only unless you specifically need them.
Do I need a special key?
Either sign in with your Square account through Square's hosted version, or paste a Square access token into your settings file, where it sits as plain text on your computer.
Which apps does it work in?
Claude Desktop and Goose are both written up, and Square's hosted version works in anything that can open a remote connection.
Can I use this to check yesterday's takings?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest things to ask for. It only needs reading access, so you can leave the safety switch on.
Is it finished?
Square labels it beta, and it is generated automatically from Square's own service descriptions, so coverage is wide but rough edges are expected.
