Once connected, an assistant can search your Drive, open a file and read what is inside — documents arrive as text, spreadsheets as rows, slide decks as plain text — and change one spreadsheet cell at a time. It cannot create, rename, move, or delete anything in Drive. Setup is the hard part: you build your own Google Cloud project, switch on three Google services, create sign-in credentials, and approve access in a browser. The code has not changed since May 2025.

Google Drive server

This MCP server integrates with Google Drive to allow listing, reading, and searching files, as well as the ability to read and write to Google Sheets.

This project includes code originally developed by Anthropic, PBC, licensed under the MIT License from this repo.

Components

Tools

  • gdrive_search

    • Description: Search for files in Google Drive.
    • Input:
      • query (string): Search query.
      • pageToken (string, optional): Token for the next page of results.
      • pageSize (number, optional): Number of results per page (max 100).
    • Output: Returns file names and MIME types of matching files.

  • gdrive_read_file

    • Description: Read contents of a file from Google Drive.
    • Input:
      • fileId (string): ID of the file to read.
    • Output: Returns the contents of the specified file.

  • gsheets_read

    • Description: Read data from a Google Spreadsheet with flexible options for ranges and formatting.
    • Input:
      • spreadsheetId (string): The ID of the spreadsheet to read.
      • ranges (array of strings, optional): Optional array of A1 notation ranges (e.g., ['Sheet1!A1:B10']). If not provided, reads the entire sheet.
      • sheetId (number, optional): Specific sheet ID to read. If not provided with ranges, reads the first sheet.
    • Output: Returns the specified data from the spreadsheet.

  • gsheets_update_cell

    • Description: Update a cell value in a Google Spreadsheet.
    • Input:
      • fileId (string): ID of the spreadsheet.
      • range (string): Cell range in A1 notation (e.g., 'Sheet1!A1').
      • value (string): New cell value.
    • Output: Confirms the updated value in the specified cell.

    • Google Workspace files are automatically exported:
      • Docs → Markdown
      • Sheets → CSV
      • Presentations → Plain text
      • Drawings → PNG
    • Other files are provided in their native format

Is this still maintained?
No. There have been no commits since May 2025. It can still be made to work, but nothing has been fixed or updated in over a year, and the author has not pointed to a replacement.
Can it write files to my Drive?
No. Drive access is read-only. The only thing it can change is one cell of a spreadsheet at a time.
Do I need a key?
Yes, of a sort. You create your own Google Cloud project and sign-in credentials, then approve access in your browser. It is free but fiddly.
How hard is the setup?
This is the hardest part by far — nine steps in the Google Cloud console, a downloaded credentials file, a build step, and a browser sign-in. It is not a paste-and-go install.
Can I use this to summarize a long document sitting in my Drive?
Yes — it can find the file, open it, and hand the text to your assistant.
Which apps does it work in?
Any MCP app. The instructions show the standard desktop-app configuration block.
Does it work with a personal Gmail account?
The instructions expect you to sign in with an account in the same organisation as the Google Cloud project you created, which is simplest with a work or school account.
