basic-memory

MCP.Pizza Chef: basicmachines-co

Instead of re-explaining your project at the start of every chat, this saves what you and your assistant work out as ordinary text files on your own computer. Later conversations can search those notes by meaning rather than exact wording, and follow the links between them. It works with Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT, and VS Code. The local version is free but needs Python installed; a hosted version syncs across phone and laptop for a monthly fee.

basic-memory FAQ

Where do my notes actually live?
As plain Markdown files on your own disk, readable in any text editor or Obsidian.
Which apps can use it?
Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT custom GPTs, VS Code, and other assistants that speak MCP.
Can I use this to stop re-explaining my project every session?
Yes, that is the whole point. Ask it what you decided last time and it reads back your own notes.
Does it cost anything?
The local version is free and open source. The optional hosted version is fifteen dollars a month with a seven day trial.
How hard is the setup?
The local install takes a couple of minutes and needs Python. The hosted version is a sign-up and a click.
Do I have to put my notes in the cloud?
No. Local-only works fine and never leaves your machine.
What happens to my notes if I stop using it?
They stay where they are. They were always just Markdown files you can move anywhere.
