mcp-google-sheets

MCP.Pizza Chef: xing5

Ask for a new sheet and it appears in the folder you chose; ask for last quarter's rows and it reads them back. It can add rows and columns, rename tabs, copy a sheet, search across a workbook, update many cells at once, and share a file with a colleague. Access goes through a Google service account, which means giving the tool its own permission to one Drive folder rather than handing over your whole account.

🤔 What is this?

mcp-google-sheets is a Python-based MCP server that acts as a bridge between any MCP-compatible client (like Claude Desktop) and the Google Sheets API. It allows you to interact with your Google Spreadsheets using a defined set of tools, enabling powerful automation and data manipulation workflows driven by AI.

🚀 Quick Start (Using uvx)

Essentially the server runs in one line: uvx mcp-google-sheets@latest.

This command will automatically download the latest code and run it. We recommend always using @latest to ensure you have the newest version with the latest features and bug fixes.

Refer to the ID Reference Guide for more information about the IDs used below.

mcp-google-sheets FAQ

Which apps does this work in?
Claude Desktop is the documented setup, and it works in any app that lets you add your own MCP server.
Do I need a key from Google?
Yes. You set up a Google service account, download its key file, and point the tool at that file.
Can I use this to build a spreadsheet from scratch?
Yes. It can create a new spreadsheet, add tabs, and fill in the cells for you.
Will it see everything in my Drive?
Only what you share with it. The recommended setup gives it access to a single folder you pick.
How hard is the setup?
The Google side takes some clicking through settings. After that you paste a short block into your app and fill in two values.
Does it read formulas or only the results?
It can fetch the formulas in a sheet as well as the values they produce.
It adds a lot of options to my assistant. Can I trim it?
Yes. You can switch on only the few actions you actually use instead of all nineteen.
