MCP.Pizza Chef: cyanheads

Ask about a treatment, a gene, or a condition and this server looks through PubMed and Europe PMC, then brings back abstracts, author lists, journals, and full text wherever it is legally free to read. It formats citations in APA, MLA, BibTeX, RIS, or Vancouver, finds related and citing papers, and converts between the different article ID numbers. A hosted version is ready to point at with one line, or you can run it yourself in Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code.

pubmed-mcp-server FAQ

Which apps does this work in?
There are one-click installers for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code, and it works in any assistant that supports MCP.
Do I need a key?
No key is required. Adding a free NCBI key raises how fast you can search, and full-text lookups through Unpaywall need an email address.
How hard is setup?
Easiest is the public hosted address, which is a single line of settings. Running your own copy is a short config snippet.
Can I use this to write a literature review?
Yes — search, fetch abstracts and full text, then have every citation formatted in the style your journal wants.
Will it get me past paywalls?
No. It only returns text that is already legally free, through PubMed Central, Europe PMC, or Unpaywall.
Is this only for doctors and scientists?
No. Anyone researching a health question can use it, though the sources themselves are academic and technical.
