Ask about a few topics in one go and a browser on your own computer quietly opens Google for each, returning titles, links and short excerpts. Reading is all it does: it will not open those pages or pull their full text. No account or paid search key is required, though you install a browser component once, and Google sometimes shows a prove-you-are-human screen you must click through yourself. Note that the code has not changed since June 2025.

Quick Start

Run directly with npx:

npx -y g-search-mcp

First time setup - install the required browser by running the following command in your terminal:

npx playwright install chromium

Is this project still being updated?
No new commits since June 2025. It still works, but treat it as unmaintained and expect no fixes if Google changes its pages.
Do I need a paid search key?
No. It drives an ordinary Google search in a browser on your computer rather than a paid search service.
Can I use this to read the full article behind a result?
No. You get titles, links and short excerpts only. Pulling the full page text needs a separate fetching tool.
Which apps does it work in?
The instructions cover Claude Desktop, and the same short config snippet works in other MCP-compatible apps.
How hard is setup?
Paste a small config block, then run one command that installs the Chromium browser it drives. Node.js 18 or newer is required.
What happens if Google asks me to prove I am human?
A visible browser window opens so you can complete the check yourself, and the search continues afterwards.
